10 Side Effects Of Tomatoes:

Not all of these side effects are serious. But, there are some which could be dangerous for us. Here we have listed the top 10 side effects of tomatoes that you may encounter:

1. Imbalanced Immunity:
The primary element seen in a fresh raw tomato is lycopene which is the carotenoid pigment. This is a chemical compound that is assumed to hold cancer at bay. However, excessive consumption of this phytochemical can interfere with the normal activities of our immune system and slow it down.Consequently, our body loses its capacity to shield itself from various common microbial (fungal, bacterial and viral) diseases. At the same time, it also becomes ineffective of fixing the current physical damages.

2. Gastrointestinal Issues:
The tomato is loaded with acids.Hence, the lavish consumption of tomato triggers several gastrointestinal disorders. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which is commonly known as ‘acid reflux’,is an intestinal disorder which is quite common. This disease increases the level of digestive acid in our stomach, which begins seeping out.Slowly, the acids reach the wall of the oesophagus and create a burning sensation in it. The acids present in the tomatoes can make this condition much more worse and can give you heartburn. Therefore,if you have previously been diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD or any other such digestive issues, then you need to limit your consumption of tomatoes quickly.

3. Irritable Bowel Disorder:
The lycopene content present in the tomato can result in some grave intestinal problems, like the Irritable Bowel Syndrome or the IBS. It is identified by intense pain and acute discomfort in abdomen along with altered bowel habits. In addition to all that, you can also feel some other minor to moderate intestinal problems like indigestion, abdominal gas, bloating, etc.,if you eat as much as 30 mg of lycopene each day. It may even give rise to signs like vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, etc.

4. Kidney Stones:
Tomatoes, particularly the seeds of the vegetable, are loaded with calcium and oxalate compounds. If you already have some minor kidney problems, then it will be really hard for your body to digest these components. In that case, having large amounts of tomato will be harmful to you since the calcium and oxalates accumulate in your kidneys and produce small to large stones.

5. Worsened Diverticulitis:
Diverticulitis is a medical situation in which the inside surface layer of the large intestine projects through the outer muscular layer and these ‘diverticula’ or small pouches get swelled due to infections. As per the scientists, tomato seeds, since it is small, can get stuck in these outpouchings and worsen the condition.

6. Deteriorated Prostate Cancer:
Studies have proven that the lycopene that is found in the seeds of the vegetable can create abnormalities in the male prostate gland. This affects the reproductive system. And this abnormality produces severe pain, difficulty in urination and erectile dysfunction. It may sometimes drive to prostate cancer.

7. Vitamin Overdose:
We all now learnt that Tomato is a vitamin-rich vegetable and when we eat a medium-sized Tomato, it gives 17 mg of Vitamin C and 1,025 IU of Vitamin A,which are one-tenth and half of our daily demands, respectively. Side effects of consuming too many tomatoes every day can drive to vitamin overdose in our body. It may ultimately lead to issues such as nausea, headache, kidney pain, etc.

8. Nutrient Deficiency:
While receiving lots of vitamins from tomatoes, you may end up stripping yourself of many other vital nutrients. It destroys your body as you become incapable of carrying out your key physical activities efficiently.
