How To Use Castor Oil For Treating Dandruff


Castor oil, which is extracted from castor seeds (Ricinus communis) is primarily used as a remedy against constipation, but it has the variety of other uses. It is very effective on ringworm infection. Its moisturizing property comes handy in skin treatments. It helps in reducing stretch mark;scars and its antimicrobial action can be brought into use to treat acne.Castor oil is widely used in various hair treatments. It has a good content of vitamin A, E and B that nourishes the scalp and hair.

The reason for castor oil’s effectiveness against dandruff is as follows:
Castor oil has ricinoleic acid, which has antibacterial properties and ricin, which has antifungal properties. As a result castor oil protects the scalp against bacterial and fungal infections, which are one of the reasons for dandruff in our scalp.
Castor oil has omega9 fatty acids and Vitamin E, which moisturize the scalp and hence protect it against dandruff and also gives soft and silky hair.
Castor oil can be considered as a rich source of omega-6 fatty acids. These acids help in stimulating the blood circulation. It helps to nourish the scalp by providing essential nutrients and also strengthens the root.
Castor oil not only reduces dandruff, but its conditioning properties also make it effective on split ends and gives beautiful hair.
Methods to apply castor oil to hair
1. Castor oil has high density and is very thick.Add little coconut oil or almond oil to reduce the thickness of castor oil. Warm the mixture slightly by holding the bowl containing the oil mixture in a container containing warm water. Massage the oil gently into the scalp. Leave the oil in the hair overnight for maximum results. Wash with a mild shampoo next day morning.
2. Mix castor oil, olive oil and lemon juice in a bowl. Lemon has antioxidant properties and also helps in fighting infections and olive oil is a good moisturizer. Apply the mixture to hair. Leave it for 30 minutes. Wash hair with a mild shampoo.
3. Mix castor oil, aloe vera gel, honey and lemon juice. Aloe vera gel has a soothing effect on the scalp and like, lemon juice, aloe vera also helps fight infection. Apply the mixture to hair. Leave it for 30 minutes. Wash with a mild shampoo.
The effectiveness will be visible only after treatment of hair with castor oil is carried out at least 7 to 8 times. So following the treatment regularly is very important. Make sure that you use only pure castor oil to yield maximum benefits.

When you massage castor oil directly to hair and scalp 20 minutes is enough to let the hair get nourished. You can wash it later. Also you need not condition your hair. It is natural conditioner.
Castor oil as secondary oil
If you feel that this oil is too sticky for your hair type and you cannot apply it. And you wish to use castor oil for dandruff cure but do not like the smell then you can mix it with any other oil and make it a combination mixture. You can use olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil or sesame oil with castor oil in 1: 2 ratios. This combination also helps to give the same benefits as you apply direct. This combination oil can be applied all night and can be washed next morning.
Castor pack for dandruff free scalp
Mix egg, 3 tsps of castor oil and 1 tsp of glycerine well. Apply it on hair layer by layer including the scalp and cover it with shower cap. Let this be for 20 minutes. Remove the cap and wait for few minutes and wash your hair. Do it regularly for best results once every 10 days.
Castor oil with turmeric
Mix castor oil 2 teaspoonful and 1/2 teaspoonful of turmeric powder. Apply it all over the hair and scalp. You can increase the quantity as per the necessity and length of your hair. Castor oil and turmeric are very effective anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents. They will help in removing the flaky bits of dandruff and prevent from infection or allergies. This combination is a pure cure for allergies, germs and dandruff.
Castor oil with citrus fruits
You can mix 2 spoons of castor oil with 1 spoon amla powder or 2 spoon amla juice or 1 lemon juice or 2-3 spoons orange juice and apply all over the hair. Let it be on the hair for 5-10 minutes.
