According to one of the recent research, eating apples every day could cut the risk of up to five different kinds of cancer. The scientists, in the study, found that those people who ate at least one apple each day were much less prone to get lung, mouth, bowel, digestive tract or breast tumours than people who seldom or never ate Apple at all.

A survey of over 40 previous studies, by specialists at the University of Perugia in Italy, observed that the biggest benefits were found in cancer of the oesophagus and stomach, where some data implied that apples nearly halved the risk of tumour.

Healthy Fruit Diet
The rate of Lung tumour among ‘Apple lovers’ was about 25 per cent lesser while breast cancer cases were decreased by a fifth.A healthy diet which includes regular consumption of fruit and vegetables has long been considered to have a shielding effect against many kinds of cancer.

Tumour Prevention
But there has been insufficient evidence on which plant foods, in particular, present the greatest advantage.
Researchers initiated the latest review to try and pinpoint if apples, as one of the most extensively consumed fruits in the world, play a major role in tumour prevention.

They merged data from over 40 different investigations examining diet and cancer. The results, which was published in the journal Public Health Nutrition, revealed the biggest consumers of the fruit had significantly lower the cancer rates than the lowest.

Fruits and Vegetables
The researchers said that it is possible that some types of fruits and vegetables may be much more actively linked with cancer risk than others because of the unique chemical composition and the potential molecular mechanisms included,

Their interest was drawn by apples as they are the most eaten fruit in European countries and is also abundant in the supply of phytochemicals. These are naturally occurring plant substances believed to have strong anti-cancer properties.

Apples having a shielding effect

Researchers said that the most reliable proof was for lung cancer, where the larger part of the studies pointed to apples having a shielding effect. In other cancer types, such as digestive tract tumours affecting the oesophagus and stomach principally, some studies covered noticed that they lowered the risk, in some cases by around half.
However, the scientists assumed that the apples are one of the most potent dietary defences against ‘life-threatening’ tumours.

In a statement on the results, they said that this provides reliable data of the protective capacity of apples against bowel, lung, digestive tract, mouth and breast cancers.

But, more investigations will be required so as to clarify the effects in other anatomical sites.
Apples are also loaded with flavonoids, which are compounds that are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.
